None of the recyclable material that is collected from the blue and green boxes as part of the Douglas Borough Council kerbside scheme goes to the Energy from Waste Plant (EFW). The EFW burns refuse waste that you place in your black wheelie bin and turns it into energy which provides 10% of the Islands electricity. However, recyclable materials such as glass and cans have little to no value for the plant due to low energy content. Therefore it makes sense to recycle these materials rather than paying to have them burnt.
The council pays to have your waste burnt through the EFW’s gate fees. The less waste that gets sent to and burnt at the EFW, the lower the cost of the waste disposal for the Council. This means more money could be spent in other areas, such as recycling.
